Chiefly correspondence, memoranda, briefs, affidavits, and other legal documents of the New Orleans law firm of Durant & Hornor, later Hornor & Benedict, relating to legal issues of slavery, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. Includes records pertaining to the Planters' Life Guard, a Confederate regiment in New Orleans, 1861-1862; prizes taken by the USS Chocura (Screw steam gunboat), as well as a list of its officers and crew; civilian arrests; and miscellaneous items relating to the administrations of generals Nathaniel Prentiss Banks, Benjamin F. Butler, Stephen Augustus Hurlbut, and George F. Shepley. Individuals represented include William S. Benedict, Thomas J. Durant, and Joseph P. Hornor.

Benjamin Franklin Butler was born in Deerfield, New Hampshire, the sixth and youngest child of John Butler and Charlotte Ellison Butler.
